The Mark Wright Project: Newsletter Issue 2, May 2009

Our fundraising activities are going really well, and thanks to all the organisations and individuals how are helping to raise funds and supporting the project. Here are some of the activities that have taken place in the last month or so.
Dumfries Boxing Tournament
On Friday, 1st May, 2009, a boxing tournament was held in the Easterbrook Hall in Dumfries. The event was organised by Robert McVie of Golden Glove boxing and was a great success. Some 20 boxers of all ages took part in front of approximately 450 enthusiastic spectators. The winners were the several charities supported on the night, the principal being The Mark Wright Project who were subsequently presented with a cheque for £5000. Boxing NightThe trustees of the Mark Wright Project thank all concerned for the wonderful effort and support shown before during and after the event.

Charity Race Night
A Charity Race Night took place at The New Pearson Hall in Glasgow, the home of A Company of 4 Para, on Saturday, 4th April, 2009. Every table in the hall was occupied to hear the welcome address by Major John McWilliams, O/C A Company of the 4th Battalion, The Parachute Regiment. On behalf of The Mark Wright Project, Harry Pearson, thanked all for their attendance and support for the project. He followed with a short speech on the history of the project and it’s current aims. Everyone had a most enjoyable evening with 6 Races, some refreshments and a break for some welcome and delicious hot food served upstairs. Thanks again to all at 4 Para and their friends for their participation in the night and the work in the preparation. Some £2200 was raised in total, £1500 of which went on the purchase of gym equipment for the project’s proposed Drop-in centre, near Edinburgh.

Local Fundraising
Local volunteers and supporters of The Mark Wright Project were out at Sava Centre, Cameron Toll, Edinburgh handing out fliers and selling wristbands over three days – 7th -9th May, and they raised just over £1500. Our thanks go to everyone involved and to Sava Centre for supporting the project.

The Mark Wright Project has also supported St Mary’s Project in Southern Scotland in providing the funding for a respite break of one week during May for ten soldiers from 3 Para who returned from a further tour in Afghanistan at the tail end of last year. Various activities had been arranged and the boys had a great time away from the norm of Army life integrating with and being spoiled by the local community. It was deemed a success by all who took part.
